After the cliffhanger from the previous episode, we find out why Mutta was considered to be dropped. Turns out his previous boss gave him a bad reference. I live in the UK and thought you weren't suppose to give a bad reference, just refuse to give one, it's certainly wrong to make up lies about their previous work. His previous boss just holds a grudge after being headbutted. My guess is it hurt is pride more than it hurt him physically.
Mutta visited the Johnson space centre and got to see Hibito in action. This is the sort of place I expect him to be while preparing for his mission. I just wonder if he'd be able to manage all that exercise. He has the will to succeed so he'd probably manage somehow.

Live on TV, Hibito proclaims his pride for Mutta and how he will become an astronaut. After the bad reference, he's lost most of his points, but if it wasn't for Masa Hoshika, he would have been out of the competition.

Perhaps he has bias from the chair screw or maybe he holds even stronger feelings from when he met them as children, but Masa is backing Mutta. I won't complain because I also have bias and want him to succeed, but I also hold bias to Kenji and even more for Serika. I'm actually surprised by how interested the brothers got into anything to do with space. They visited the space centre as much as they could and even when no one else did and memorised scripts to presentations. I guess after anyone sees how dedicated they are, it's natural to back them up.

Masa has an interview with some of Mutta's old colleagues to find out the real story behind the assault. Sure Mutta did something wrong, but when it comes down to it, it was for his brother. Other than that one incident Mutta still far surpasses the other candidates. Masa's help just proves Mutta has luck and fate on his side. Other than Mutta deserving the position, Masa is also doing it for his own sake as a way to move on from not making it to space himself. Lets believe in Mutta together.

Hibito just announced to America that his brother will be an astronaut while his Mutta just worries if he'll be one or not.
and looks like going back and forth to JAXA when they were kids wasn't really for nothing since Masa waited for the two of them(:
